The Naval Air Station Lemoore (NASL) Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Center has processed $1,010,720 in refunds this year, surpassing last year’s total of $972,000.
The volunteers at the center have assisted military families in processing 311 federal returns and 293 state returns.
With the deadline for federal income tax being just over a week away, Jim Maciel, the NASL VITA Center site coordinator, says they are on track for hitting this year’s goal of $1.2 million.
The deadline for filing federal income taxes and most states’ income taxes is Tuesday, April 17. Those who are unable to file their income taxes by April 17 must file for an Extension of Time to File with the IRS to receive an additional 180 days to complete their federal return.
There are special exemptions for the extension that apply to military members who are currently serving in a combat zone. For more information go to https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/extension-of-deadlines-combat-zone-service.
The VITA Center’s hours of operation are 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 9 a.m. to noon Fridays. Hours are subject to change if the Legal Office is closed. It will remain open through April 17.
Maciel encourages families to not wait until the last minute to file their returns. VITA volunteers can help those unable to file their returns on time file for an extension with the IRS.
The center can help those individuals file their returns later in the year via appointment by calling 559-998-2800.
