KINGSBURG — Stephen Vargas is the new Kingsburg boys soccer coach and he will bring a defensive style to the Vikings.
“We want to be technically sound and build up from the back,” Vargas, 37, said. “We’re going to play the style of a higher level club or pro team.”
Kingsburg went 4-19-3 overall and 3-6-1 in the Central Sequoia League last season under former Vikings coach James Holocker who is now coaching in Hanford. The Vikings in 2016-2017 tied for fourth place in the CSL with Central Valley Christian. Dinuba won the league with a 9-0-1 record.
Vargas, a former high school player, has coached an array of youth and club teams in Kingsburg and Selma and will be an on-campus coach for the Vikings. Among the teams he has guided is the Real CenCal Soccer Club, a Northern California Premier squad.
“We have an off-season program and we’ve had about 35 kids for that,” Vargas said.
Vargas anticipates having a strong defensive team in 2016-2017 and hopes to control the ball as much as possible.
“We’re going to play possession soccer and if we can out-possess teams we’ll be successful,” he said.
