TULARE — The Selma girls wrestling team captured its fifth-straight California Interscholastic Federation Central Section title along with six individual champions and eight state qualifiers at the masters tournament at Mission Oak High School on Feb. 15.
The Bears won the tourney with a team score of 300.5 and had a large margin of victory with second-place Golden Valley scoring 186.
Gracie Figueroa (123 pounds) and Alleida Martinez (113) each continued their undefeated seasons by winning their fourth-straight Valley titles. Figueroa improved to 20-0 on the year and Martinez continued her unblemished record at 19-0.
Other Selma wrestlers that earned a Valley championship were Merijah Morales (108 pounds), Nicole Smith (139), Jerzie Estrada (152) and Mikayla Balderas (237).
Chelsy Mendoza (103 pounds) and Melanie Mendoza (118) also qualified for the CIF State Girls Wrestling tournament. The former finished at third while the other finished as the runner up in her weight-class.
The Bears will look to win three-peat as state champions at the Visalia Convention Center on Feb. 23-24.
Selma boys win section championship
HANFORD - The Selma boys wrestling team dominated at the CIF Sierra/Sequoia Valley tournament at Sierra Pacific High School on Feb. 16-17.
The Bears broke Valley records at the Sierra/Sequoia tourney by having the most champions on the team (11 individual titles) and scoring the most points in the history of the tournament (363 points).
Selma’s 11 champions were Richard Figueroa (106 pounds), Tristan Lujan (113), Eric Rivera (120), Tyler Sepulveda (126), Robert Areyano (132), Luis Ramos (138), Tony Mendoza (145), Jace Luchau (152), Oscar Diaz (160), Christian Rodriguez (170) and Isiah Jimenez (195).
Rudy Garciaar 182-pounds qualified for the state masters tournament by placing fifth and 285-pounder Xavier Moran placed fourth and will move on as well.
The Bears will compete at the CIF Central Section Masters Wrestling tournament at North Bakersfield High School on Feb. 23-24.
Kingsburg has five qualifiers for Masters tourney
HANFORD - Kingsburg had five wrestlers qualify for the Masters tournament at the Sequoia/Sierra tourney at Sierra Pacific.
Vikings wrestlers who will continue their season are Jett Jackson (126 pounds), Brandon Rocha (160), Dylan Stockton (195), Alfred Carpenter (170) and Jonathan Viveros (120).
Jackson, Rocha and Stockton each placed fifth. Carpenter went third and Viveros was the runner up in his weight class.
The remaining Kingsburg squad will compete at the Masters tourney at North Bakersfield.
KINGSBURG - The Selma girls basketball team is the Central Sequoia League champion after defeating Kingsburg 61-49 on the road on Feb. 14.
The Bears finished the regular season at 20-9 overall and 8-2 in CSL play. As for the Vikings, the team’s season ends at 9-16 overall and 4-6 in league games.
In the fourth quarter, Selma outscored Kingsburg 16-4 after the score was tied at 45 through three quarters.
Junior guard Madi Mares lead the Bears in scoring with 18 points along with seven rebounds. Center and junior Taj Pannu recorded a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds for the team.
Tasharee Vaughn had a game-high 20 points and Emily Fuentes scored 13 for the Vikings.
Maddy Reed scored eight points and recorded 14 rebounds with five blocks.
Selma will continue its season in the CIF Central Section Div. III playoffs as the No. 3 seed and will take on No. 14 seed Frontier High School at home on Feb. 21 at 7 p.m.
