Bears win one, lose one

The Selma High volleyball team split a pair of matches last week, defeating Dinuba 3-2 and falling to Immanuel 3-0.

The Bears downed the Emperors 25-16, 25-17, 22-25, 18-25, 15-12. Caitlyn Hansen had 16 kills and 11 digs; Gracie Figueroa chipped in with 15 kills; Genesis Rodriguez had 33 digs; Gurleen Brar managed 10 kills and two blocks; Caylin Lopez had 35 assists and six digs and Danielle Leon six kills.

Selma was downed by Immanuel 25-11, 25-14, 25-8. Hansen had nine kills, Lopez 12 assists and 11 digs and Rodriguez nine digs.

Selma, following last week’s action, was 12-14 overall and 1-7 in the Central Sequoia League.  

Mixed results for Vikings

The Kingsburg volleyball team beat Dinuba 3-0 on Oct. 16, but fell to Central Valley Christian 3-0 on Thursday. The Cavaliers avenged an earlier loss to the Vikings with the win.

In Kingsburg’s 25-22, 25-9, 26-24 victory against Dinuba, Karen Rodriguez had six kills and 12 digs; Kassidy Wilson chipped in with five kills, two service aces, six digs and seven assists; Olivia Doyle had three aces and seven blocks; Erin Bishop seven assists; Jennah Torres had six kills, two aces and 16 digs; and Karlee Hodges had seven digs.

Against CVC in a 25-12, 25-15, 25-23 loss, Torres had six kills and nine digs; Wilson contributed three kills and four assists; Rodriguez managed three kills; and Bishop had seven assists,

Kingsburg (20-8 overall after the CVC match) visited first-place Exeter on Oct. 24 and hosts rival Selma (12-14, 1-7) on Thursday.  

Bear JV’s prevail  

The Selma High junior varsity football team downed host Immanuel 32-7 on Friday night.

Chris Rosas and Kenny Lopez had two touchdown runs apiece and Robert Jauregui and Kenny Lopez had one short scoring run each. Immanuel did not score until the final minute.

Aaron Blancas led Selma in rushing with 86 yards. Jauregui paced the Bears in tackling with six, Josh White had 5 ½ and Daniel Garcia five. 

Selma frosh fall

The Selma High freshmen football team fell to visiting Golden West 20-12 on Thursday.

Jeremiah Herrera had a 2-yard touchdown run for Selma and Joseph Ramirez a 35-yard TD run.

Ramon Gonzalez had 91 yards rushing for Selma and Herrera 89. Ramirez chipped in with 77 yards.

Royal Valle led the Selma defense with four tackles and Caleb Acevedo had  three.

Kingsburg girls polo wins twice

The Kingsburg High girls water polo team defeated Selma on Tuesday, Oct. 17 and downed Dinuba two days later.

The Vikings scored 14 goals against Selma; the Bears’ point total and individual scoring was unavailable. Against Dinuba, Kingsburg prevailed 18-2. 

The Bears were led against Selma by Brighton Kinney (seven blocks), Sofie Righetti (one goal, one assist, three steals), Jessica Burch (one goal, one assist, one steal), Megan Buendia (one goal, one assist), Jillian Gipson (three goals, one steal), Mikahyla Vierra (two assists, three steals), Evan Yakligian (three goals, one assist, one steal), Bridgette Garcia (two goals, five assists, one steal), Bianca Valenzuela (two steals) and Tara Fry (one goal, one steal).

Fry led Kingsburg against Dinuba with four goals. Also excelling against the Emperors were: Kinney (four blocks, one goal), Righetti (three goals, three assists, three steals), Burch (one goal, one steal), Buendia (one goal, one steal), Gipson (one goal), Vierra (two goals, three assists) and eight blocks; Yakligian (one goal, three assists, one steal), Garcia (three goals, four assists), Valenzuela (two assists, one steal) and Mary Rooney (one goal, three assists).
