The 16-team Selma varsity girls basketball shootout is set to begin Wednesday, Nov. 29, and run through Saturday, Dec. 2.

The four-day tournament will include games at both Selma High and Lincoln Middle School.

Selma is idle the opening day of the tournament and will kick off play on Thursday.

Wednesday's first round games at Lincoln Middle School include Roosevelt vs. Strathmore (4:30 p.m.), Fresno vs. Lemoore (6 p.m.) and Dinuba vs. Kerman (7:30 p.m.) and Mission Oak vs. Mendota (6 p.m. at Selma).

Wednesday's first round games at Selma High include Madera South vs. Sierra Pacific (4:30 p.m.), Mission Oak vs. Mendota (6 p.m.) and Clovis East vs. Caruthers (7:30 p.m.)

First round play concludes Thursday with Sanger and Shafter playing at 4:30 p.m. at Lincoln and Selma playing Center (Antelope) at 4:30 p.m. at Selma High.

Should Selma win its opening game, it will play the winner of Sanger and Shafter later in the day at 7:15 p.m. at Selma High.

If Selma loses, they'd play the loser the same game in the consolation bracket at the same time at Lincoln.

The tournament concludes with Saturday's 7 p.m. championship game at Selma High.

Selma girls open 1-1

Following a slow start, the Selma girls basketball team turned it on in the second half to pull away for a season opening win Nov. 20 at Lincoln Middle School.

Trailing 11-8 after the first quarter, the Bears' offense erupted for 25 points in the third to pull away during a 67-57 win over visiting Porterville.

The Bears had three players score in double figures. Lizette Moreno led the way with 20 points; Taj Pannu had 15 points; and Audrey Gonzalez finished with 10 points.

On Nov. 25, the Bears lost to Rodriguez 58-48 in a game played at Golden One Center in Sacramento.

Rodriguez pulled out to a 51-31 lead after three quarters with the Bears outscoring Rodriguez 17-7 in the fourth. Moreno scored a team-high 16 points. Pannu added 11 points.

Selma begins play in the Selma Shootout Nov. 29. 

BOYS BASKETBALL

Kingsburg falls in opener

KINGSBURG – With Kingsburg and Golden West tied 30-30 at the half, the Blazers outscored the Vikings 34-27 in the second half to pull away for a season opening win.

Kingsburg (0-1) played late Monday night after this issue went to press.

The Vikings play Woodlake Wednesday, Nov. 29, in Reedley.

BOYS SOCCER

Selma 1-0-1

The Selma boys soccer season opened with a win against Kennedy (Delano) and a tie against Madera.

The Bears defeated Kennedy 5-0 Tuesday before playing the Coyotes to a 1-1 tie Nov. 24.

Selma played Reedley Nov. 28, in a game after press deadline.

The Bears stay at home for a nonleague game against Madera South Dec. 5.

Riverdale tops Kingsburg

KINGSBURG – The Cowboys scored in overtime to break a 1-1 tie as Riverdale knocked off Kingsburg 2-1 Nov. 21.

Both teams scored in the second half after going scoreless in the first half.

Kingsburg (0-1) played Lemoore in a game after deadline for this issue Nov. 28. The Vikings begin play in the Buchanan tournament Thursday, Nov. 30, against Hoover.

GIRLS SOCCER

Selma opened the season with a 3-0 win at Hanford West Nov. 21.

The Bears (1-0) begin play in the Roosevelt tournament Friday, Dec. 1.
