City officials ready to unveil vision for Hanford parks and recreation offerings

Talk of ambitious capital projects may be tempered by the harsh economic climate, but Hanford isn't taking a back seat when it comes to planning for the future. City officials are ready to unveil their updated vision for Hanford's parks and recreation offerings for the next 10 years.

On Wednesday, a draft parks and recreation master plan -- under development for the last eight months -- will be presented for the first time to the City Council and the Parks and Recreation Commission, as the two bodies hold a joint meeting. The blueprint would outline projects and programs necessary to meet the town's growing and changing needs for quality of life, said Scott Yeager, Hanford recreation director.

"The consulting firm has been doing research for the last several months, completed a phone survey, made site visits at schools and had some public meetings getting input about the city's facilities and programs," Yeagar said. "The draft is a compilation of all the information, recommendations and action plans."

The city hired East Coast consultant firm Norris Design Inc. in February. The firm has since been doing research to figure out what kind of facilities are important to the community, where the best locations are for them, what programs people would like to see. The draft document is the culmination of the research, but it is not yet the end product.

Feedback from the City Council and the Parks and Recreation Commission will be integral to finalize the planning process, Yeager said.

"The purpose of the meeting is to present the result of the master plan, and it will be followed up by a question-and-answer period. Whatever feedback that comes from the council and commission will be incorporated into any modifications to the document."

The final draft is expected to be presented to the City Council for approval at the second meeting in November.

The reporter can be reached at 583-2429.

" Well now,

"The city hired East Coast consultant firm Norris Design Inc. in February."

Nah....I wouldn't have guessed...using an outside consultant firm all the way from the East Coast?

What next: consultants outsourced to India?

(Bet we could have saved money of that contract!)

Wonder how much we spent for that 10-year plan, seeing that with the economy the City won't have too much extra money to spend unless taxes and fees are raised...again.

I guess parks and recreation ARE considered essential services... "

" You know Alihandero, there just is NO pleasing you is there? You and others complain about the alledged "Good Ole Boy" network, and when the City has an outside company who is an expert in their field, you cry outsourcing. What would you have said if the City put together their OWN Master Plan? I bet I can guess. I say kudos to the City for having an outside company provide guidance and knowledge and to take the time to contact citizens, hold open meetings etc. and spend 8 months doing it with an unbiased mind.

I'm sure you will have an excellent reason why this was a bad idea. "

Here's a cheaper alternative: ASK THE PEOPLE. "

Well, "hanfordnaitive [sic]," you really do need to 'think outside the box' you've painted yourself into.

I never said "bad."

How about EXPENSIVE? Especially with TAXPAYER MONEY.

The article goes on to say:

"The (East Coast) firm has since been doing research to figure out what kind of facilities are important to the community, where the best locations are for them, what programs people would like to see."

What, this was the most cost-effective way to go for the City? Or just the easiest once again? Why an East Coast firm who has to come all the way out here to see what WE want and/or need?

Sorry to raise questions you don't like, but perhaps Diane Sayre’s "Stupid Bag" is the place to pop into like some sort of antipathetical 'Snuggie.' "

Well said, Jarred, well said! "

" I received a phone call from the research group and answered and responded to questions for about a half of an hour. My children grew up participating in the different recreational activities such as Daddy Daughter, Mother Son Date Night, Girls Night out, Boys night out, the summer program, Kids Parade, the Teen Center Dances, the Hanford Band Revue, the baseball clinic, etc. I love our recreation dept. I think they do an awesome job. I do want the Plunge to stay where it is. The researchers even asked my opinion on moving the Plunge. My children took swimming lessons there for three years. "

" To: Jarred anyway you slice it this is not going to be accomplished on a Subway Sandwich Menu Price Board. It will take much more than a few $5 subs to make this reality. "
