Roosevelt School fire labeled arson

Arson is suspected in a school yard fire at Roosevelt Elementary School that destroyed more than $30,000 worth of playground equipment on Friday afternoon.

Assistant Fire Chief Bill Lynch said people were seen in the area of the Davis Street school just prior to the blaze, leading investigators to assume the fire that destroyed several pieces of playground equipment was intentionally set.

"There's nothing out there to spark the fire anyway," Lynch said. "There's no gas running to the playground, no electricity. With no other ignition factors, we have to believe it was an intentional act."

The Hanford Fire Department was called out to the school at 2:45 p.m. to reports of smoke in the area. When they arrived, it was to find a square plot of wood chips burning in the middle of campus.

Two engines and seven firefighters responded to the scene. The fire was under control within 10 minutes of their arrival.

Lynch estimated the value of the destroyed equipment, which included a jungle gym with an attached slide and a swing set, as being more than $30,000.

The school was apparently closed at the time of the fire.

"This kind of loss is going to be pretty substantial to the school district," Lynch said.

The Hanford Elementary School District could not be reached for comment on the incident.

Anyone with information about this fire is asked to contact the Hanford Police Department at 585-2540.

Reporter Melissa Knopp contributed to this report.

The reporter can be reached at 583-2425.

" The people who are responsible for this fire @ the school have NO RESPECT for the children, teachers or the school district.
My child attends the READY program there & loves playing on the playground equipment when shes there~The people responsible for this should face harsh punishment for their actions~If found that they are students @ Roosevelt their parents should be held responsible for there childrens actions~If these children attend the school they should be xpelled from the school indef due to there lack of RESPECT/DAMAGE/ and ROLE which they played.
Are education system is suffering enough due to the budget cuts & now something like this happens~This will affect not only the school, but kids & the district financally.
I hope that whoever is responsible for this pays for what they have done. "

" I live in this general area & on any given day whether school is in session or not there's a lot of "activity" going on. Should there really be access to the grounds when school is out? I see people sitting in their front yards across the street or just hanging out. They have to see a lot going on but this is an area of 'I didn't see a thing". There's more than fires going on in this area, the police know this. At one point they made their presence known but as soon as they would drive away "shopping" continued. It doesn't take a detective to recognize this. "

" Botton line is there's WAY to much traffic going on @ that school when school is in session & when its not in session~Due to lack of parental supervision that is why something like this has occured~Many parents just send there children off to "play" rather than deal with them, supervise them or give them the one on one attention they need because they are either to busy, they just dont want to or because they are just to lazy to~I have picked up my child from the READY Program & have noticed the "DISRESPECT" by the unattended children not just to myself but to the school staff & property by the children who are on the school grounds when they are not enrolled in the after school program which is going on~Bottom line due to lack of parental supervision this in why something of this nature has occured~
It would be nice if the City of Hanford would use some of the "BUDGET" money its going to save & obtain some more programs for the children to keep them occupied & to prevent further problems like this. "

" Unfortunately, vandalism happens more often at the schools than people know, not just graffiti...but brutal vandalism. "

LuvBugzMom wrote on Jun 29, 2009 7:23 PM:

" If you REALLY look at this, the true ones affected here are the children who attend the school & their after school program~
The act committed here was a selfish act which could of been prevented by parents watching there children & being responsible (if the ones who did this were kids)~
The sad part here is the fact that the school district is facing a budget defict & it has lack of funds so who will be the one's to repair the playground equipment.?..I hardly expect to see the one's who did this selfish act step up & take RESPONSIBILITY to pay for the rebuilding of the equipment~ "

" To: LuvBugzMom wrote on Jun 29, 2009 7:23 PM:

Did anyone ever stop to think that this was done to take the children's minds off of their excercise equipment and put them on a more profitable venture for who ever did this horrible deed? Perhaps some children who said; no to drugs went and played on the equipment so in retaliation the drug thugs set their excercise equipment, swings and slides up in smoke. I know that concept is hard to wrap your brain around but that equipment was not set to self destruct and someone lit those chips ablaze. "

LuvBugzMom wrote on Jul 2, 2009 12:38 AM:

" Hi Watchdog Fred:

OMG..I would of never of thought to think of that Fred, but in all honesty I would have to say that I dont think that is why this happened.
I picked my daughter up daily from after school & her also her after school program which is held at that school there til 6pm and I have seen the children who are on the school grounds after hours show great disrespect to the school grounds, other students as well as disrespect (verbally) to the school staff/after school program staff as well as parents who pick up there children.
I hate to say this Fred, but with all due respect i believe that whoever did this just had lack of respect for school, the children who attend it, and that this is due to the lack of supervision that parents give there children. "

" To Jeff: Imagine walking into your home, and seeing holes punched completely through the walls. (not just a few, but approximately 50). It looks like a sledge hammer was used to make these holes, because they go through booth walls. Many of your windows are broken out, and doors are literally torn off the hinges. Sounds brutal to me.
