'Guitar Hero' competition

VISALIA -- The City of Visalia Parks and Recreation Department will be holding the first Live Guitar Solo Competition on Friday, Jan. 16 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Main Street Theater, 307 E. Main St. Box office opens at 5:30 p.m.

Over 20 contestants auditioned in November for the opportunity to perform in the finals. Only 10 finalists were selected. The community is invited to come and enjoy the talents of Visalia's finest youth guitarists.

Tickets are on sale now for just $5 and may be purchased at the Anthony Community Center, 345 N. Jacob or at Whites Music, 100 E. Caldwell. Tickets will also be sold on the day of the event for $7.

Opening reception

VISALIA -- Brandon-Mitchell Gallery, located at 117 South Locust St., is hosting a reception for artist Sharon Banister. The reception will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday. The exhibit will run from Dec. 20 through Feb. 1. The exhibit is titled "The Next Chapter."

China Alley Museum

HANFORD -- Hanford's 19th Century Taoist Temple Museum will be open Saturday from noon until 6 p.m. for the holidays.

The museum gift shop, staffed solely by volunteers, features unique gifts under $30, including Chinese folk arts and crafts, books for children and adults about Chinese culture, Chinese teapots and toys.

Winter 2008/09 exhibition

HANFORD -- The Winter 2008/09 exhibition, "Generosity in Clay: Modern Japanese Ceramics from the Natalie Fitz-Gerald Collection," will run until Jan. 30 at The Clark Center for Japanese Art & Culture, 15770 10th Ave. The exhibition will incorporate tiny incense boxes as well as over 6-foot-high wall installations. Concert

HANFORD -- Eric Genuis, a world renowned composer and musician, is coming to St. Brigid Catholic Church tonight to give a powerful and moving concert with talks on music, culture and our youth. The concert starts at 7 p.m. All are welcome. Admission is free.

KC Art League Winter show & Young Master's Show

HANFORD -- The Kings County Art League newest exhibits "Winter Show" as well as the 15th annual Young Master's Show are now open at the Kings Art Center through Jan. 3.

Local residents are encouraged to come view the 234 works of art by the community's youngest artists -- as well as Kings County Art League's Winter Show -- at the Kings County Art Center.

The gallery is open Tuesday through Sunday, from noon to 3 p.m. and admission is free.

The focus of this event is to offer members the opportunity to show and sell their work in the Marcellus Gallery. Artwork pickup will be during business hours 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Jan. 5.

Kings Symphony Orchestra Christmas

The Kings Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Leonard Ingrande, will present its annual Christmas Concert this Sunday at 4 p.m.

Guest artist, vocalist Mary Pedreiro, will sing several holiday selections. The audience will join in on the carol sing-along and the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel's Messiah.

The concert will be held at the Hanford High School Presentation Center on the corner of Grangeville Boulevard and Douty Street.

Tickets are available at the door. $12 Adults, $10 Seniors $5 High School and College Students.
