Job applicants flock to discount chain

A full-service 99 Cent Only store is coming to Hanford. The store, which will fill the old Monte Mart building in the shopping center at Lacey Boulevard and 11th Avenue, is set to open Aug. 21, said Fredy Mengabar, a district manager for the discount chain.

A long line of job applicants spilled out the front door Wednesday as construction inside continued.

Many were recent high school graduates in search of their first full-time job.

"It seems good to me right now, because I'm not really paying a lot of bills," said 18-year-old Hanford resident Joseph Larios, who applied for a $9-an-hour position in stocking and receiving.

Larios said his temporary position at Leprino's didn't provide enough hours.

"All they do is just call me randomly. It's kind of hard to wait on a phone call," Larios said.

Teresa Flores, who graduated from Hanford High a few months ago, said that this would be her first full-time, paying job.

She formerly worked for El Cactus restaurant in Armona, which was owned by family members.

She said $9 an hour sounds OK "to get started."

The store will add another low-price shopping option to several others in town, among them Dollar Tree, Factory 2-U and Big Lots.

"We're not selling anything over 99 cents, and now the economy is very bad, and people are looking for a good deal," Mengabar said.

The reporter can be reached at 583-2432.

" It's great when new business opens up. It's too bad it's jobs that pay $9/hr and use people less than full time. This is what our local EDC has created. Thanks for the jobs. "

" better than nothing, right? getting a good paying company to move into Hanford is hard, but even more now because the economy is bad. "

The Fearful Football Forecast: Week 6

Maybe I was having self-esteem issues when this thing started, I don’t know. Or maybe it’s a good thing I pick a heavy diet of college games, since I know that game a little better than I do the NFL. Perhaps it’s just the pure joy of a baseball postseason with out the Yankees, or [...]

Acedia

It’s an old word. Some translate it as exhaustion of the soul. World weariness. Soul sickness. It’s fallen in favor, out of favor, disappeared from use, and lately crept again into consciousness. You find the term popping up — in talk shows in the Bay Area, in conversations with friends, in exhortations from conservative thinker William [...]

The Fearful Football Forecast: Week 5

Curse you, ESPN! Thanks to shifting around a couple of college football games to counter playoff baseball on TBS, I didn’t get a chance to make a pick on what could be one of the more intriguing WAC games of the season, La. Tech at Boise State. Worse, since morst folks here insist on watching Game [...]

Maybe it’s not the economy, stupid

Fear grips Wall Street, and we quake. At the Sentinel, we’ve been living the crisis for days. Eating, breathing, and reading stories with headlines like “How bad the economy really is” and “Fallout on Wall Street worse than after 9/11.” Consternation hangs in the air like a cloud. What if our 401(k)’s evaporate? What if the Sentinel goes under? What [...]

Crazy items spotted at 99 cent store

If you haven’t been to the new 99-cent only store in town yet, do make the trip — but do it with extreme prejudice. You may find it extremely entertaining. I’m not usually a big fan of a dollar store of any kind (Being ‘frugalista’ frequenting a dollar store doesn’t necessarily mean saving money, let [...]
