Clovis duo shines at Lemoore Junior Golf

LEMOORE -- Championship showing by two Clovis golfers, and a record performance by a young Lemoore golfer, highlighted the action at the two-day Lemoore JGANC Junior Open golf tournament this week at Lemoore Golf Course.

Pace Johnson and Asia Adell -- both students at Clovis West High School -- captured the boys and girls overall titles, respectively, in the event which wrapped up Tuesday. Johnson shot 69 and 68 to finish two shots ahead of Kerman's Timothy Toste, who was recognized as boys 16-17 champion while Johnson received overall medalist honors. Adell, meanwhile, shot 68 and 77 to edge Lemoore's Heather Billingsley by two shots. Billingsley was recognized as the girls 15-17 champion.

Stealing the individual single round thunder was Cody Neal, who set a course record by firing a 66 on the first day of the tournament Monday. Neal, who'll be a freshman at Lemoore High this fall, followed with a 72 to cruise to the boys 14-15 title by eight strokes over Mikey P. McGinn of Springville.

Two Kings County golfers turned in top 10 finishes in the boys 16-17 division. Hanford's Steven Green shot 73 and 71 and tied Clovis' Cooper Louie for third best score at 144, while Lemoore's Cole Neal -- older brother of Cody and current No. 1 at LHS -- shot 75-70 to place fifth at 145.

Cole Neal was one of four closest to the pin winners, while Lemoore's Luke Schuh delivered the longest drive on his way to shooting 84 and 79. Lemoore's Brandt Rodrigues collected longest drive honors on his way to an eighth place finish in the 14-15 division.

Other division winners were Fresno's Ryan Corbin, boys 12-13 (80-75, 155); Fresno's Hannah Sodersten, girls 12-14 (81-80, 161); Clovis' Marissa McCardell (48-50, 98); Clovis' Sean Duckering, boys 10-11 (40-38, 78); Morgan Hill's Austin Murphy, boys 7-9 (36-34, 70); and Friant's Jacqueleine Ngo, girls 7-9 (44-48, 92).

The event attracted a total of 109 junior golfers from throughout the Central Valley and central state.

The Fearful Football Forecast: Week 6

Maybe I was having self-esteem issues when this thing started, I don’t know. Or maybe it’s a good thing I pick a heavy diet of college games, since I know that game a little better than I do the NFL. Perhaps it’s just the pure joy of a baseball postseason with out the Yankees, or [...]

Acedia

It’s an old word. Some translate it as exhaustion of the soul. World weariness. Soul sickness. It’s fallen in favor, out of favor, disappeared from use, and lately crept again into consciousness. You find the term popping up — in talk shows in the Bay Area, in conversations with friends, in exhortations from conservative thinker William [...]

The Fearful Football Forecast: Week 5

Curse you, ESPN! Thanks to shifting around a couple of college football games to counter playoff baseball on TBS, I didn’t get a chance to make a pick on what could be one of the more intriguing WAC games of the season, La. Tech at Boise State. Worse, since morst folks here insist on watching Game [...]

Maybe it’s not the economy, stupid

Fear grips Wall Street, and we quake. At the Sentinel, we’ve been living the crisis for days. Eating, breathing, and reading stories with headlines like “How bad the economy really is” and “Fallout on Wall Street worse than after 9/11.” Consternation hangs in the air like a cloud. What if our 401(k)’s evaporate? What if the Sentinel goes under? What [...]

Crazy items spotted at 99 cent store

If you haven’t been to the new 99-cent only store in town yet, do make the trip — but do it with extreme prejudice. You may find it extremely entertaining. I’m not usually a big fan of a dollar store of any kind (Being ‘frugalista’ frequenting a dollar store doesn’t necessarily mean saving money, let [...]
