Thanks for the help
Editor: On July 6, a small group of students broke into Avenal Elementary School and did approximately $250,000 in damages. The vandalism done by these students was a terrible act and showed disregard for district property, but more importantly disrespect for the students and staff at Avenal Elementary School.
As a community we must remember that these students do not represent who we are or the value we place on education. A more accurate representation of Avenal and Reef-Sunset Unified School District is the group of staff and students who continue to work to have the school ready for the first day of school. The parents, community members, and church groups that have offered to volunteer their time show us the real community of Avenal.
The calls offering equipment, furniture, and manpower show us that Avenal and Reef-Sunset Unified School District do not stand alone, but are supported by a larger community that cares about the education of our children.
I would like to thank the staff and students who have worked so very hard to have the school ready for opening day. I also want to express my appreciation to the Kings County Sheriffs who responded so quickly to our call and the Kings County Probation Department for keeping us informed about the students taken into custody. And a special thank you to the organizations, community groups, and individual citizens who offered assistance.
The vandalism at Avenal Elementary School was a terrible act; but the resulting acts by students, staff, community, and organizations demonstrate who we really are.
