It's a growing irony

Editor: Thankfully, Hanford has the foresight of our newly self-appointed savior of the Hanford City Council, Dan Chin. Only weeks after announcing the Council is contemplating tearing down the Plunge, he announced he is running again on a platform that includes the construction of a new police station. Wonderful, now Hanford will have a place to put the additional misguided youth displaced by the new retail shops at the Plunge.

Looking forward, with all of the experience he brings, I imagine he won't waste millions on feasibility studies, the purchase of virgin ground and the construction of a brand new station. Surely, he knows a police station isn't supposed to serve as a source of pride in a community, but is a tool used to facilitate law and order. When he looks at vacant buildings, such as Wal-Mart and the old Sears building, he will see value in revitalizing vacant buildings to serve the fine people who protect our city. His inherent knowledge will suggest to us that the Cal Trans success in Fresno's Manchester Center could be duplicated here. After all, isn't that what we're trying to be? A big city. Or are we?

The announcement by Sue Sorensen in Saturday's Sentinel is a welcome distinction between herself and Mr. Chin, including his current city council members. Her platform seems to contrast the current plans of Mr. Chin to remove youth activities and increase spending on new government buildings. Mrs. Sorensen is suggesting we enhance youth activities and work to retain our public safety officials, not build a memorial to honor their service and imprison disenfranchised adolescents. Our tax dollars should be spent offering these heroes competitive wages and benefits.

I believe Mr. Louis Martinez said it best in his editorial last week; it is time to throw the bums out. This election will help determine what our city looks like in the future. Voters must decide now if we are going to let it all go to developers or if we will try and maintain some the niceties associated with living in a small Valley town.

" Dan Chin has no business running for reelection. Anybody but him. Anyone in his district should be able to cream him in the election. Easily. "

" Dear Todd:

Sue and Chin are not running against one another. In fact, the run in the same circles. So, vote for one, you vote for both.

Otherwise, I agree with your opinion. "

" There needs to be a new voice on the city council. Dave Thomas seems to be the only voice of reason at this time and he is out voted. We need someone who has the interest of the people of Hanford in mind when decisions are made. Not on how much money the special interest groups will fill my pockets with. Right Mayor Gonzales! This is the time to make a change for the better for our city. Take the time to get out and vote for change! Re-election for any of the current council member with the exception of Mr. Thomas would lead to further curruption and greed with no clean plan for Hanford's future. "

" Did it ever occur to the writer that maybe the city will take the large proceeds from the sale of the plunge/fire station/Serpa's and build an even bigger recreation complex and at the same time, raise a lot of tax revenue from a site that is currently making little (other than Serpa's)? Seems like a smart deal to me. "

" Logic defies the current council... really - take a look closely. You can visit a couple of years worth of minutes on their website. Logic would have dictated that the Super Wal-Mart not be allowed to set up shop in the enterprise zone until they took care to sell and/or lease (signed) the behemoth of a building left behind. Logic would dictate that when these big businesses pay their way, yet, the citizens are burdened with the additional debt of incentives when in fact the big businesses would pay whatever was required to play ball in retail arena.

Also, logic dictates that you redevelop current property you own rather than buying new and building fresh... The actual cost is much less. "

" Carl, you need to move to some other town. Your suggestion to use the proceeds to build bigger and better show you prefer to live in "Generica" (a term used to describe instant cities made of taupe and terra cotta box stores) the type that Paynter Real Estate Investment, Inc. develops. The pueblo type bedroom communities that pop up all over in northern and southern California look like a Paynter project. If Huell Howser (California Gold) finds this town SO quaint, it's because of places like the plunge and fire station. Why would anyone in their right mind get rid of it? It's a place for our community to use in the center of town. Carl, you must have some financial interest in the "exclusive real estate deal" with Mr. Paynter. No other reason could validate your position. I understand the real estate market is very soft near Perris Valley and the Inland Empire. You should move there so you can feel more comfortable. There's a lot of beige and tan retail and empty homes whose values are 60% of what they were 3 years ago. Chin needs to be voted out of office or recalled. WAKE UP HANFORD! "

" BAAAAAAHHHHHHH, HANFORD IS FULL OF A BUNCH OF SHHEEEP AND YES SIR PEOPLE. THERE GOOD LITTLE SOLDIERS THEY DO WHAT THERE TOLD AND RUB EACHOTHER FEET,BACKS,WHILE RECIEVING A PAY CHECK OR KICK BACKS. HANFORD CITIZENS ARE TIRED OF IT ALL LOOK AT THE BLOGS.. WE NEED CHANGE AND WE NEEDED IT LIKE 10 + YEARS AGO.... "

Watchdog Fred wrote on Jul 28, 2008 2:54 PM:

" Well Carl Spackler - it looks like I am not the only one who considers your ideas don't fit this little community. I think when you moved here the quaint little town is probably what captured your interest. The friendly people and hospitality probably over whelmed you. Now that you are a member of the community you want to rewrite everyone's opinions and condem us for wanting to keep our town the way it is wholesome and friendly not stupid and out of control. There is no growth pattern to this community any longer, what are we gonna do keep moving west until we incorporate Armona and Lemoore. Well if that plan leaks out Lemoore and Armona just might band together to make us the former city of Hanford. We are already falling behind Lemoore in the Industrial area and have for years because the same Council Members have been dealing with the same single set of outside developers instead of putting out what we have to offer to more than one person. What if next Paynter puts his eyeballs on the civic auditorium are you gonna surrender that for new development? "
