Sorensen, Chin say they’ll run

A candidacy for the Hanford City Council was announced Friday by a familiar name in central Hanford, and City Councilman Dan Chin began his campaign for his third term representing the east Hanford district.

These announcements precede the nomination period, which opens on Monday.

In District B, which generally spans the area from downtown up to Magnolia Avenue, City Planning Commissioner Sue Sorensen said she would make a run for the seat, which will be vacated by outgoing councilwoman Marcie Buford.

Buford, a 20-year veteran on the council, has announced not to seek re-election.

In District C, which spans the area whose growth is reflected by Hamilton School and Freedom Park, incumbent Chin is seeking re-election He ran unopposed in 2004.

So far, Sorensen is the only candidate who publicly confirmed a run for District B as well.

"It took thoughtful consideration. It didn't come lightly," Sorensen said Friday.

Sorensen, 55, a dental hygienist who runs a denture lab with her husband Kirk, is no rookie in public service. She has been a local public figure for the last 20 years. She served two terms on the Hanford Elementary School District Board of Trustees from 1988 to 1996 and two terms on the Hanford Joint Union High School District board from 1996 to 2004.

After serving two years on the Hanford recreation commission, she was appointed to the seat on the planning commission, the largest, and perhaps the most prominent, advisory body to the city council.

"Having responsible leaders in our community is invaluable; having fair leaders who listen and value the input of the community is a must," Sorensen said. "And I feel that I've shown that through my past service. I read my information, but I come in to listen to all sides of the situation before making a decision."

A 33-year Hanford resident, mother of three and a grandmother of six, Sorensen says her priorities are: continued improvements in youth recreation opportunities; recruitment and retention of public safety personnel; taking the educational opportunities marked with the Joint Educational Center to the next level; and develop economy by producing quality workforce.

Dan Chin's next move

Veteran downtown businessman Chin, 50, says he felt obliged to run again when Buford, another experienced council member, made it clear she would not run again.

"It became more focused with my intention when I had a conversation with Marcie Buford and she said she would be stepping off," Chin said. "It became more clear that my experience would be needed on the council."

Chin says he wants to follow through with unfinished business that he considers holds a particular importance for the city's future.

Specifically, at the top of his priority list are the improvement of public safety by building a new police station and increasing staffing for the fire department, improving the recreational venues by renovating swimming and park facilities.

Chin's redevelopment aspirations also include the appropriation of money toward a multilevel parking garage in downtown Hanford.

"These projects have been talked about in the past but have never been put on high priority," Chin said. "I'm making them a priority to complete over the next four years."

Wheelchair-bound because of his quadriplegia, Chin was a major advocate behind the city's joint venture with the Hanford Elementary School District to bring forth the Hamilton School-Freedom Park complex, which is marked with an all-accessible playground.

Chin's political career in Hanford, where he was born and raised, began with an appointment to the Hanford City Planning Commission in 1988. In 1998 he was elected to a seat on the Hanford Elementary School board, which he resigned after two years to run for the council.

He won the contested city council race in 2000. He ran unopposed in 2004.

Stepping off the stage

Buford has indicated earlier this year she would likely retire after the current term, which is up in December.

On Friday she confirmed she would not seek re-election.

"I think it's time to have someone else come in and start over, a younger person with more energy," Buford said.

First elected in 1987, Buford has continuously served on the city council, which makes her the longest serving member of the current council. Buford received the Rose Ann Vuich Ethical Leadership Award in 2003.

Buford, a businesswoman, said a key city issue for her remains to be the development of the industrial sector of the economy. "Industry and industrial jobs provide the best economic underpinning for any community," she said. "Whoever gets into the office needs to be aware of the importance of expanding the industrial base by encouraging new businesses and assisting existing small businesses."

Potential candidates

There are at least two residents who have expressed an interest in running for District B, but neither candidacy is confirmed.

Robin Mattos, a community advocate whose husband Andrew Mattos previously ran -- though unsuccessfully -- for the seat in 2004, said she is exploring an opportunity to run for the seat. Mattos finished second in the previous race.

"I'm considering it," Mattos said on Friday. "I still have a period of time to make a decision. At this point, I haven't made a decision yet."

Another former challenger of Buford's in the 2004 race, Jon-Michael Hice, spokesman for First 5 Kings County, said he is eyeing a candidacy in District B as well. Hice was a third-place finisher.

"I'm going to make a choice before the deadline," Hice said Friday.

" Sorenson has been a blank check for the City Council that now exists. Nothing will change if she becomes a City Council Member. What is needed is someone with no political ties. We do NOT need any more 5 diamonds for softball. What a WASTE! We need recreation for low income, for youth who might otherwise turn to gangs. She has lead a life of privilege- she would have no idea how to help those of the community who need the help.

What about Senior Citizens. Does anyone have their needs in mind? "

" OMG can someone please explain to me what a hi-rise parking garage is going to do to the look of a historic down town area? I also wonder with the Wal~mart building still laboring for tennants, why not move the new Police Station there, along with city yard maintenance, mechanics etc., it is not a provocative retail outlet any longer not eligible for the tax breaks etc., that the complex directly south of it receive. There is more than enough space to contain the Police Department and several other City Offices within the walls of just the old Wal~mart structure. Furthermore why waste money building ground up when we have vacant buildings within the city limits. Does anyone see now why I've said all along that Chin has outstayed his welcome on this City Council. If Dan Chin is so into accessibility for disabled then why hasn't he taken a more active roll in street level parking, correct ramping, enormous curbs that block the path of the disabled? Chin is like the rest following the lead of the true city Manager Bob Dowd, who went to the Sentinel with Dowd? "

" My recommendation would be to scrutinize anyone with repeated community service. I think we need someone who is not wearing the political blinder and can think on their feet. Someone who has managed a business and knows what it is to make a payroll and the frustration of dealing with government in obtaining necessary permission to expand their business. Somone who is interested in attracting Industrial Business to the Industrial Park, not within our city streets on a land grabbing mission. Robin Mattos I would like to hear a little more from. My first question to Mrs. Mattos: do we need to destruct the progress we have made for recreation ie., the plunge and skatepark as a part of her recreational growth plan and if so why? What is her opinion on hearing and placing more emphasis on outside investors than local investors in the community. Why are outsiders the one's who always get the free pass and would that be her vote? What about accountability be required by every Department Head in the City for budget and responsible expenditure wihtin their departments? Do you know Bob Dowd? "

" Dear Voters,
Since Chin isn't ready to retire gracefully, it's time voters made the decision for him.
Chin's actions for some years now leave no doubt he doesn't have Hanford's best interests in mind, including:
The Jan Reynolds case - interesting how recently the DA's motives have now come to light - and what other city upsets might develop.
The back room dealings and lies surrounding the eventual change from Michael Noland - an honest attorney.
The hiring and awarding Dowd the contract to become city attorney despite his high cost, lack of experience and eventually the council turning over additional buckets of money to him as if it grows overnight on our beautiful downtown trees.
It's time for a change starting with Chin's self serving seat on the council. "

" People, OF HANFORD UNITE SO WE DON'T GET THESE same intolerable minds on the CITY COUNCIL. In my opinion Mrs. Sorenson helped plan our city into the current non-planned nightmare that it is and is self serving and certainly not a good public servant. SHE would have to know what others want and then CARE..

Chin would be a repeat with way too many business owners floating his ideas and we don't need any repeat perforrmances on empty minded council members.

We need good clean INDEPENDENT THINKERS instead of getting these GOOD OLE BOY AND GIRL mentalities in a City that needs NEW THINKING, not can you rub me and I'll rub you.

MY OPINION and I've seen this happen over and over again for the past 40+ years in this town. We seem to repeat the same BAD PERFORMANCES.

My advice, really look at these candidates and see what they have done in the past. If they just got you Measures and Bonds and built you out of a City. Then it was for them NOT YOU.. "

" If you hear the word CHIN; next to it should be JACQUES.

He and Dick Jacques are tied at the hip. Jacques is the little buzz in his ear tfor all the real estate development decisions in this City to go his way. He's also tied to Buford but that shouldn't surprise anyone.

Those challenging this mentality will wind up like Jan Reynolds. If you play the game, your okay. Just look at who they have now. Mr. Misenheimer was in Public Works but he plays the game, he's friends with all (even D.A.) rubbing eachother's backs. Has it even been ascertained if he has the education for this job?

Those voting for anyone THIS TIME AROUND without checking out truly WHO or WHAT they stand for; I think deserves what they get; and shouldn't blog or complain however, those of us sick to death of the repeat performances in this town; should vote for ANYONE BUT THESE TWO (Chin and Sorensen).

Why don't we give Mattos a chance? Can you tell me anyone who's exposed more and cared more? "

All I can say is the more names we can put on the ballot for those two seats of people who care about Hanford and not their self interests the better. The larger selection of non-professional candidates the better off we will be, I am in favor of people who state they will work with the remaining members but not follow their lead and not be afraid to be the dissenting vote. There is too much cooperation of voting on the council, never any serious dissenter to stand out and say this is wrong and this is why I believe it to be so. Use the media as your friend don't be afraid to let the media know your opinion differs when it does, be able to get the people of this city behind your objections. The City Council is in serious need of a take charge leader to direct them in the right direction for all residents of the city. "

She steamrolls her policy through like she is the only member on the board, why? We certainly don't need Chin's leadership, he'll constantly be on the phone asking Dowd and Marcie what to do next? As he reaches for Gonzales to throw him under the bus if it goes wrong. He's done it before folks, experience my eye, it's more like self preservation is his goal in life. As you seek your candidates and you move toward the polls ask yourself do you want more of the same or someone who will make a difference to your community. Someone who has ideas for development in the Industrial Park. We should be adding water slides and improvements to the plunge not knocking it down or filling it in with concrete. Our children/grandchildren deserve better than this "

Review of planning commission minutes show hard hitting questions, i.e. 4/8/08, asking if a 22 acre development with 87 homes would be required to have a park, the time frame the project needs to be completed by and why an easement is required. 87 homes and no required park for kids, why?

She served on school board(s), worked in support of Measure C with Marcie Buford and John Zumwalt, was appointed to Mr. Chin's Media Policy committee. She was appointed to the planning commission in 1/06.

Time and time again, she votes to approve large projects, especially when it benefits one of her colleagues or friends. Yet when a small business entrepreneur sought to rezone a property on 11th Ave. they were told by her they should have done their homework before they bought the building. I even challenged all members of the City Council not just Dan Chin, but all of them to acquire a wheel chair and continue their normal duties at home and work for one twenty four hour period and gain an idea of how difficult this city is to negotiate without help. A trip to the Market Place on Thursday nights can wear a disabled person out just trying to get around and participate in shopping and enjoying a night out in Hanford. Not everyone is in a wheel chair, walking disorders, canes, crutches its more than the abled body person will ever realize. Do the Council Members walk in the Christmas Parade or do they ride in a vehicle or on a float. Show the same concern and consideration for the seniors in town and the disabled. Here's an idea, how about some strategically placed seating along the way for people to rest and recouperate in as a first step. Our money spends just like an able bodied persons money does. We are disabled not dis-enfranchised. How about a hand! "

" For several years in a row, before Dan Chin was on the City Council (back in the days of Joe Crain and Si Lakritz), he sponsored a disabilities awareness day. He convinced every council member to either spend the afternoon in a wheelchair, place a cast on their leg or cover their eyes( to simulate blindness) and then try to navigate downtown. He gave each a list of common tasks to perform, like buying an ice cream from Superior Dairy, and then went with them to reinforce the lesson. As a direct result of these efforts Hanford city offices are all accessible and downtown has curb cuts on every corner of every intersection. I’m sure no one who participated in one of these awareness events, or knew of the handicap access campaign Dan lead, is counted among those casting the ignorance stones. Shame on those who are! "

If what you say is true could you please ask him to do it again because it wasn't accomplished the first time. Were the ruts and potholes all addressed on Irwin Street at Douty Street thru 6th Street where Market Place is held? Was Market Place even around back then, I don't believe it was. But it's good to know that Simon Lakritz did get some things done you can always count on him. "

I'm young - 27, Fresh ideas - graduated college in LA, I know of small town mentality - grew up in a small town outside of Modesto, ca., Am a LOCAL business owner - Dragonfly furniture located inside the Hanford antique emporium, and handsome - I've been told that people in politics need to be good looking so I threw that last bit in based on my wife's impression (which reminds me, I'm a Hanford homeowner with a family with young kids). VOTE FOR N. HANFORD RESIDENT!!! "

Is it your claim that Dan Chin was responsible for the passage of the American's With Disabilities Act of 1990 which required public places be accesable to those with disabilities??? "

ALEJANDRO wrote on Jul 16, 2008 6:15 PM:

" RE: Disabilities

There are many existing Federal and State laws requiring handicap access and accommodations.

What things - other than current mandatory access and accommodation requirements - did Mr. Chin's ‘Awareness Day' provide?

Are we 100% sure that the city (and for that matter the county) - meets current laws and standards? They are expensive to retrofit unless new construction has these features built in.

Has Chin ordered the City Manger to make a complete assessment or was one already recently done?

Its called ‘compliance.' "

" To Teddy P. and ALEJANDRO,
Dan Chin orchestrated his access awareness days over 5 years before the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act was passed. Since you honor Si Lakritz, another Chamber Man of the Year, ask him. He was both there and a participant. Must you trash every good work? Why not list your accomplishments over the past 25 years. Do you have any? Even one? "

" We need to keep the Plunge open for the kids! For what else will the kids have to do? You read in the paper daily about John Doe got a DUI or Joe Blow got caught with a controled substance. We need more things for our youth to do. What happened to the Dollar Movies? Bowling Alley for the kids to go anytime. We need new blood in our City Council. We do not need any more retail shops. Let's not forget our Seniors either. By the way good job with the 4th of July Firewoeks this year. "

Watchdog Fred wrote on Jul 16, 2008 11:49 PM:

" Alejandro - go look in front of Superior Dairy at the handicap parking spot, now if you were on the driver side, how do you negotiate that two and a half foot curb if you are handicapped?
Secondly walk across the street lay a lazer level down and check the degree of the slope of the ramp going to the Civic Auditorium, if that is within Architecural Standards for the ADA I'll buy you a $6 burger at Carl's Jr. Better yet borrow a wheel chair and use your own strength to push yourself up that grade and tell me it's accessible?
Furthermore let's think about this there is a fire in one of those office buildings that have had cutaways done in front of them. So in the event of a fire or other emergency the only escape route for a disabled peron is out into oncoming traffic? I don't hardly call that safe or accessible for Handicapped people do you? How many times have you been in a handicap restroom and some kid is playing in the handicap stall? It happens more than people realize. "

Watchdog Fred wrote on Jul 16, 2008 11:56 PM:

" Alejandro - another fire scenario how many city streets in this town in the event of fire would a handicapped person have to push theirselves to a corner from midblock, to have access to disembark the sidewalk? At the curb in front of Superior Dairy while all the abled body people were running across the handicapped cut piece. The wheel chair bound person will be doing a nose dive face first onto the street. Here is another scenario everyone is invited out to see the Tahoist Temple but how can a wheel chair bound person see it. First off have you seen the disrepair of that alley way with ruts and holes that would surely snag a wheel of a wheel chair, not the big wheel so much as the little directional wheels in front. Yeah they've made improvements when in 1985 and not since then? All these things you ponit out that Chin pointed out are all in the ADA laws and regulations, up to and including availability of seating for handicapped people in wheel chairs in the Foxx Theatre, which means removal of several sections of fixed seating. "

O.K. I'm considered medically handicapped have a plaque to prove it and the inability to support it, I absolutely think you owe me and many more on here an apology for the wide brush you used to describe our comments. You or no one else including Dan Chin can speak for me or my disability, because I concentrate on what I am able to do, not what I am not. Until people like you think you have to climb up on a soap box and set me straight. I have a news flash for you until you have a disability you never recognize the inconvience, the inability to do simple things you use to do such as fix your own vehicles, walk to the store, chase your grandkids around and play with them. Dan's disability is far more serious and although I don't agree with his politics, I admire his courage.

I’m sure no one who participated in one of these awareness events, or knew of the handicap access campaign Dan lead, is counted among those casting the ignorance stones. Shame on those who are! " "

The Fearful Football Forecast: Week 6

Maybe I was having self-esteem issues when this thing started, I don’t know. Or maybe it’s a good thing I pick a heavy diet of college games, since I know that game a little better than I do the NFL. Perhaps it’s just the pure joy of a baseball postseason with out the Yankees, or [...]

Acedia

It’s an old word. Some translate it as exhaustion of the soul. World weariness. Soul sickness. It’s fallen in favor, out of favor, disappeared from use, and lately crept again into consciousness. You find the term popping up — in talk shows in the Bay Area, in conversations with friends, in exhortations from conservative thinker William [...]

The Fearful Football Forecast: Week 5

Curse you, ESPN! Maybe it’s not the economy, stupid

Fear grips Wall Street, and we quake. At the Sentinel, we’ve been living the crisis for days. What if our 401(k)’s evaporate? What if the Sentinel goes under? What [...]

Crazy items spotted at 99 cent store

If you haven’t been to the new 99-cent only store in town yet, do make the trip — but do it with extreme prejudice. You may find it extremely entertaining. I’m not usually a big fan of a dollar store of any kind (Being ‘frugalista’ frequenting a dollar store doesn’t necessarily mean saving money, let [...]
