Vandals hit Avenal Elementary

A group of 10- to 12-year-old children broke into Avenal Elementary School on Sunday, causing $250,000 worth of damage. Five of the school's current or former students have been arrested in connection with the vandalism.

Kings County Sheriff's officers were dispatched to the school just after 6 a.m. Monday, where they discovered the aftermath of burglary, vandalism and arson.

According to police reports, suspects vandalized the school's main office and classroom building, as well as the cafeteria. Photocopy machines were damaged, at least 25 computers were destroyed, fax machines and printers were destroyed and TV screens were shattered.

Most of the school's classrooms were left with paint, glue, food and other classroom materials covering the floors. Much of the debris spread beyond the classrooms and into the halls. The paint and glue caused considerable damage to carpets, linoleum and walls.

Deputies also found that a fire was started inside the main school building, though the flames died before causing much damage.

Gang-related tagging was among the wreckage, but none of the arrested boys are confirmed members of a gang. In interviews with detectives, the boys said they tagged to mislead officials and make them think the crimes were gang-related, said Avenal Substation Cmdr. David Putnam.

"I have never seen this extensive of vandalism [in Avenal]," Putnam said, reflecting on his years in law enforcement.

Suzanne Monroe, new superintendent of Reef-Sunset Unified School District, said she didn't know the number of children involved in the crimes or their motive. Monroe has been superintendent of the district for less than a week, but said "you might as well jump in with both feet."

Monroe said the children apparently used hammers to break windows to get into the buildings between 3 and 5 p.m. on Sunday, though custodians were the first to discover the damage early Monday morning.

The school has surveillance cameras but no alarm system, Cmdr. Putnam said. Officials believe they have arrested the children who committed the crimes, but detectives are still investigating.

There is a reward for any information leading to the arrest of the suspect(s) in this case. Contact the county sheriff's office with any information.

The reporter can be reached at 583-2424.

" Ok, here is an idea. The damage has been done, the kids should have to clean up the mess and I also think that the parents should have to help for not watching their children. We all know that if the parents had been doing what they were supposed to then these kids might have been doing something more constructive, instead of distructive. Make Them Clean It UP!!! "

CJ wrote on Jul 8, 2008 4:34 PM:

" This is what happens when there is nothing for kids to do in the summer. Parents are not watching their children, and allowing them to run all over town with friends.
These kids need more to do, and obviously supervision. I am not shocked at what they did. Arresting 10-12 yr olds? OMG, they did not go to CYA. THose kids are too young, the most that is going to happen is that they are going to see a probation officer who will decide their fate. Avenal is such a little town, and there is no where for the kids to go, and they are bored. They are looking for something to do, and excitement. NO matter what that is, AND nobody has taught them right from wrong. "

Claire wrote on Jul 8, 2008 5:58 PM:

" Bored kids are boring. Why don't today's kids make their own fun? Are there not Legos, board games, erector sets anymore? Or pick up a book! Don't they have summer reading lists? I used to have a book report due on the first day back to school. Some of the best schools in the country have a required summer reading list. There is no excuse for kids to be on the loose. "

Lack of parental control and no respect for property wrote on Jul 8, 2008 8:31 PM:

" These children had their lessons from someone. I have no sympathy for the children or the parents they are all the kind of people that need to be deported out o the country. I bet this family will suffer in no way...the P.C. bull and RAZA organizations will patronized and treat these people with kid gloves. They will be target poster-children, escaping being prosecuted. The ill-equipped mother and father should be deported!Jail them all and make them do hard time in a Mexican jail where it will really count. Now all the people they know/family members are trying to make some sort of retribution in a form of clean-up...will they start returning welfare cash-aid they receive to cover the $250,000.00 worth of equipment and building damage too? I bet you they don't.I don't want to listen to all the crocodile tears they are so freely weeping...they suck as parents, role models and are all criminals with actions that reflect their normal mode of operatus. "

what if it were your kid wrote on Jul 9, 2008 2:29 AM:

" Excuse me, but, NOT all of the children were Mexican :( You do not know all the facts, so before you start playing the race card, realize that kids sometimes do bad things. Yes, they did it, and yes there will be consequences.
These are 10-12 yr. olds who messed up badly .they need constructive activites in their community. DO NOT blame the parents .The parents are going to be held accountable for the mistakes their children made. FOR SURE.
What if it were your child, Nephew, or anyone related to you. Would you be so quick to pass judgement then? "

" Kuddos to lack, you said it all except maybe C J should reward them with a train ride, they are where they should be jail and the hall. "

Mrs.D wrote on Jul 9, 2008 11:45 AM:

" Because of Herr Schwarzenegger, there won't be enough funds to replace to damaged items. The parents probably do not have insurance of any type to cover the damages. The kids involved will be under the scrutiny of law enforcement until they turn 18. The parents of one of the kids involved(a mom and stepdad)were arrested after wiping the fingerprints off one of the laptops and hiding it under a tree instead of calling the police.

I hope the first day of school at Avenal Elementary will start with a very long lecture on what not to do if you don't want to start off life in juvenille hall. "

Im with Lack of Parental Control... wrote on Jul 9, 2008 4:28 PM:

" To those of you claiming these kids were "bored", what a cop out! I got bored as a child as well and I never felt the need to destroy property like this.

What we have here is a lack of any moral or values on the part of the parents. In my opinion they need to start paying the $250,000 bills. All that stuff was paid for with taxpayers money folks! "

Watchdog Fred wrote on Jul 9, 2008 4:51 PM:

" This is the primest example of why we don't need to close down the skate park and the plunge. Idle hands and minds don't stay that way. Give the youth something else to do like swimming and skating and less of this behavior will occur.
I however, do not excuse either the kids nor the parents and this article is a little behind, because according to the noon news the kids have been apprehended are in Juvenile Hall and the parents may be required to pay resitution for the quarter million dollars worth of damage done at this school. This behavior should not be tolerated for one second. "

CJ wrote on Jul 10, 2008 1:23 AM:

" Taxpayer, A trainride? That was a dumb comment. Actually, I know two of the kids, and one of them personally. A family members kid. AND know how the child is being raised... No excuses for any of their behaviors. The kids need professional help. What is scary is that they are all so young. What does the future hold for them? Is this just the beggining of a lifetime of crime?
That is what concerns me the most. I fully agree and support that the parents of these kids needs to be held responsible . The kids need mental health services, and intervention.
I am angry, upset , and digusted that a family member's child is involved in this . the family is in deep pain , by what happened. Again, this is not a race issue. The families involved are not all hispanic. PLease do not go there. :( "

Excuses Excuses wrote on Jul 10, 2008 11:49 AM:

" I'm not willing to excuse their behavior because there's nothing to do in Avenal...I grew up in Coalinga and Avenal where the big complaint was "there's nothing to do" and it never occurred to me to go out and destroy things. And I was raised in a single parent household so that is no excuse either. It is NOT the community's responsibility to provide these punks with activities...it IS the paren't responsibility, along with teaching them right from wrong! I DO blame the parents and I also blame the vandals...even if they weren't taught respect from their parents they ARE old enough to be aware of the concept and act on their own
Unfortunately becuase of their ages, they will get off easy. They should have had to clean up the mess they made, then be restricted from using any type of school property other than the class room. No computers, movies, library boooks, free lunches, or extra curricular activities.
And if any of these boys were family or friends of mine I would fell the same way....disgusted!! "

Ill say it if you wont wrote on Jul 10, 2008 12:27 PM:

" As sad as this is, what is even sadder is the news coverage of volunteers scrubbing the floors, walls, etc. and I just think of the family (although they are probably very upset) should be helping. What an awesome thing if the Sheriff's Dept. was able to take those kids back out to the school and help clean up. "

No Foul wrote on Jul 10, 2008 2:27 PM:

" Oh Mrs D, must you whine and complain about Ahrnald "Pump you Up" Schwarzenegger. Remebr it is your liberal friends in the California Senate that control the purse strings and if you really think the California Teachers Association and the National Education Association really care baout education? then keep on drinking the cool aid while you illegal imiigrant pals commit more crimes without punishment. Poeple do not be shocked about this incident, this is the society created by liberalism that you voted to put into power by electing them into office. Oh just stand by cause there is more coming. Those vandals/ kids will be in school by fall with body gaurds at your expense and the school environment that lacks discipline withe ahil them as heros to another illegal immigrant cause! "

Blame Who wrote on Jul 10, 2008 2:40 PM:

" First thing I thought about when I heard this was these boys must hate some teacher or just school. To me this just is not normal behavior. Tell me again why the mother is being charged? Seems to me the boys are the ones who were the vandals. You can't have you eyes on boys of that age 24/7.lets put the blame where it belongs on the boys. "

Watchdog Fred wrote on Jul 10, 2008 6:59 PM:

" The saddest part of this entire episode of events is who did these juvenile delinquents hurt the most. The other kids in school, because they must do without at the start of the school year.
The parents should be required to pay and if they own property a lien should be placed against it until it is paid in full. $250,000.00 worth of damage doesn't begin to cover it. How many manhours our now wasted, how many manhours went in to filling out forms and requests for grants to buy the computers and other stuff that was destroyed. What future child is doing without becasue these monsters felt taking out their personal agressions/frustrations were more important than another childs education.
I think these juveniles should also be saddled with paying their parents back the damages they now must pay because of them. As soon as they reach legal age or obtain their first jobs it should start coming out. But for now they need to be locked away from the rest of society, evaluated, helped and kept locked up until they have been reformed to live in society as contributers. "

To What if... wrote on Jul 10, 2008 8:12 PM:

" Now the truth comes out from a family member. These kids need drugs, just like every other kid who lacks discipline. And intervention....because the parents can't handle their behavior without the state therapists providing excuses that translates into "my kids a brat" money. Oh yeah, the state of California is a great parent. San Francisco and L.A., they have well disciplined, morally sound, well adjusted kids thanks to state provided excuses. Lazy parents whine on tv and wipe fingerprints off of stolen property. We are getting tired of your refusal to discipline you children. If you can't handle them, quit having them. "

Mrs.D wrote on Jul 10, 2008 9:41 PM:

" RE:No Foul, The thieving Republicans were the ones behind the recall election to put Schwarzenegger in the Capital. He also stole money from Education that he promised to replace but never did.

What these kids and parents were bad. But I have seen plenty of white and black families do far more foul things to protect their kids. "

Watchdog Fred wrote on Jul 11, 2008 2:21 PM:

" Mrs. D. - what is it with you every blog I turn to you are dealing out the race card? If it's that bad move back to Texas or whereever and let your husband send you money to live on. Everyone knows there is no racist in Texas, for sure! Hey pardner, you got a linchin' rope on yur saddle!
All I can tell you is defending them by pointing out that every race has misbehaved children does not solve the problem. What and where are you achieving these ideas that you have to throw out the race card everytime "

embarrased wrote on Jul 13, 2008 4:05 PM:

" I am embarrassed to know some of these kids. worse yet, to be related to one. No excuses for their behavior! These kids are locked up and will be prosecuted . Parents , possibly. I am peeved about the truth of the parents, collecting welfare, food stamps, and their kids commiting crimes. Definately a burden to society. So ashamed to know what has been going on in the home, and how he has been raised. Yes, raising a child poorly, will have its repercussions. I see the light now, and the parents are in denial. They need to know that it was their fault for not knowing where their own kids were, what they were doing, and who they were with. "

to Mrs. D wrote on Jul 13, 2008 8:21 PM:

" Mrs D, you said "What these kids and parents were bad. But I have seen plenty of white and black families do far more foul things to protect their kids. " Why specify black families over other races?? Black history in America is as sad or even sadder than Indian history in America. The black race has been persecuted for hundreds of years and is just now getting some equality with lots of work still to go. If you are trying to support Mexicans by putting down the black race then shame on you. Members of the black race have and do commit a lot of crimes, but I believe they have been greatly influenced by their sad and violent history in America. What do Mexicans have to complain about, not enough free welfare for their illegitimate kids?? Also, majority of gang members are hispanic and in case you haven't noticed even the Mexicans want out of Mexico. These kids and their parents have committed crimes against our country and schools, I guess since they are Mexican we should just give them a big hug and flush oru tax money. "

Mrs.D wrote on Jul 17, 2008 12:19 AM:

" RE:to Mrs. D, You're making a point in saying that all bad things that happen here is because of Mexican people. Guess what? ALL bad things happen because of PEOPLE. My pointing out to you that if someone who is black that does something bad, no one here bothers to point that out because it's racist. If someone here does something bad and is white, no one will point that out because it's either racist or justified.

Congratulations, you have just figured out what's wrong with this country and world: it's full of bad PEOPLE regardless of race. Mazel tov. "
